Application
1. Flavor and fragrance industry (Core application) :
Aroma characteristics: Compared with methyl benzoate, ethyl benzoate has a more prominent fruity aroma, while the floral scent is relatively weakened. It has the characteristics of sweetness, fruity aroma, a hint of floral fragrance and a slight herbal scent, and is often described as having an aroma similar to that of cherries, grapes, blackcurrants, strawberries, pineapples and other fruits.
Daily chemical fragrances: Widely used in perfumes, colognes, soaps, shampoos, body washes, skin care products, cosmetics, detergents, air fresheners, etc. It is mainly used as a fixative and modifier for fruity notes, which can enhance the sweetness, fruity flavor and body aroma of the formula. It is often paired with floral, woody, spicy and other fragrances.
Edible flavoring: It plays an important role in food flavoring and is mainly used to provide rich fruity flavors, especially:
Berries: Strawberries, raspberries, blackberries, cherries, grapes (especially dark grapes).
Tropical fruits: pineapple, mango, etc.
Others: Plum, apricot, peach, rum aroma, etc.
Applied products: soft drinks, hard candies, chewing gum, jelly, pudding, ice cream, baked goods, dairy products, seasonings, etc.
2. Industrial solvents:
Physical properties: It has a relatively high boiling point (~212°C), which is higher than that of methyl benzoate (~199°C), and is a high-boiling-point, moderately polar solvent.
Solubility: It can dissolve a variety of substances well, including:
Cellulose esters (nitrocellulose, cellulose acetate, ethyl cellulose).
A variety of natural and synthetic resins (alkyd resin, polystyrene, polymethyl methacrylate, rosin, damar resin, etc.).
Oils and waxes.
Application field:
Coatings and inks: As a high boiling point solvent, it is used in nitrocellulose lacquer, acrylic lacquer, vinyl lacquer, printing inks, etc. It can adjust the drying speed, improve the leveling property and gloss, and reduce the "whitening" phenomenon caused by the rapid evaporation of the solvent.
Adhesive: Used for cellulose-based or resin-based adhesives.
Cleaning agent: Removes specific oil stains, resin or polymer residues.
Polymer processing: As a plasticizer or processing aid (though not as commonly used as specialized plasticizers).
3. Chemical intermediates:
Similar to methyl benzoate, ethyl benzoate is also an important organic synthetic building block:
Hydrolysis: Benzoic acid and ethanol can be produced.
Transesterification: Reacting with other alcohols to prepare other benzoates (such as benzyl benzoate).
Reduction: It can be reduced to benzaldehyde.
Other synthesizations: Used for the synthesis of fine chemicals such as pharmaceuticals (such as intermediates for certain local anesthetics and antibacterial agents), pesticides, dyes, and fragrances. It is particularly worth noting that it is an important raw material for the synthesis of benzyl benzoate (through transesterification).
4. Plastic Industry
It can be used as an auxiliary plasticizer, mainly targeting cellulose plastics (such as cellulose acetate and nitrocellulose), providing flexibility and processability.
However, its plasticizing efficiency is usually lower than that of mainstream plasticizers such as phthalates, and its application is relatively limited.
5. Laboratory Uses:
Organic synthesis: As a reactant (such as Claisen condensation), solvent or extractant.
Analytical chemistry: It can be used as a reference substance or solvent in gas chromatography.
Teaching experiments: Used to demonstrate esterification reactions, hydrolysis reactions, etc.
